12 Days in Spain Itinerary: (Barcelona, Madrid & Seville)

Planning your first trip to Spain? Or your 5th? Here's exactly how to spend 12 days in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville — with honest tips, tapas culture, epic day trips, and everything in between.

Spain caught us completely off guard! We knew it would be beautiful — we didn't expect it to be this transportive. The food, the culture, the late nights, the regional pride in every city — Spain is one of those destinations that is truly rejuvenating for the soul and has you planning your return before you've even left.

Here's how we'd plan it if we did it all over again.

Why Barcelona, Madrid & Seville?

These three cities are the perfect introduction to Spain's incredible diversity — and together they give first-timers a genuine taste of what makes this country so special. Barcelona dazzles with cosmopolitan energy and jaw-dropping architecture. Madrid pulses with culture, art, and the soul of a true capital city. Seville wraps you in the warmth of Andalusia — intimate alleyways, flamenco, and food that feels deeply regional and personal. And the best part? Spain has so much more to offer beyond these three — this trip will just make you hungry for it all.

Barcelona (5 Days)

Barcelona hits differently. It's a city where world-class architecture, incredible food, and a buzzing street culture all collide — and you feel it the moment you arrive. The non-negotiable: Gaudí. His work is everywhere in Barcelona and it is unlike anything else in the world. The Sagrada Família is genuinely striking — begun in 1882 and is famously unfinished for over a century.

Photos don't do it justice, the scale and detail will stop you in your tracks. Park Güell is equally extraordinary, a hilltop wonderland of mosaics and organic forms with sweeping views over the city. Book tickets for both in advance.

Then slow it all down with tapas hopping. Barcelona's tapas culture is a beautiful concept — small plates, good wine, great conversation, moving from bar to bar. The best tapas are all farm to table, you order and they make it fresh right there — every single bite is worth it. Don't rush it. This is how the city is meant to be savored.

Getting from Barcelona to Madrid

The AVE high-speed train takes around 2.5 hours and is one of the great rail journeys in Europe. Book ahead for the best fares!

Madrid (3 Days)

Madrid is Spain's capital in every sense — grand boulevards, world-class art museums, incredible food, and a warmth that makes you feel instantly at home. It's a city that rewards slow exploration.

One absolute must: Chocolatería San Ginés. This legendary spot has been serving churros con chocolate since 1894 and there is a reason the line is always out the door. It's one of those simple, perfect food experiences you'll talk about for years.

Madrid is also a city of art. The Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums form one of the greatest art triangles in the world — all within walking distance of each other. Even if museums aren't usually your thing, give them a chance here.

And remember — get ready for late dinners. Restaurants don't fill up until 8pm or later. Lean into it. The vibe is fun, unhurried, and deeply Spanish.

We learned this the hard way — we showed up to a paella place at 7pm when it opened and discovered the chef was still on their way. We waited, and it turned out to be the best paella we ever had. Sometimes the best travel moments come from just leaning in and going with the flow.

Getting from Madrid to Seville

Another smooth AVE train — about 2.5 hours. You'll arrive into one of Spain's most beautiful cities feeling like you've traveled back in time.

Seville (4 Days)

Seville is the soul of Andalusia. Narrow alleyways draped in flowers, orange trees lining every street, flamenco drifting out of doorways — it's romantic, authentic, and completely captivating. Walk everywhere and let yourself get lost.

The food here has its own regional character — fresh, flavourful, and deeply local. Every meal feels like a celebration.

Seville is also the perfect base for epic day trips into the south of Spain. Two that moved us deeply:

Córdoba — a short train ride away and home to the Mezquita, one of the most extraordinary buildings we've ever visited. A single structure that reflects three religions — Jewish, Muslim, and Christian — each layered onto the next across centuries of history. It's heartwarming, serene, and humbling all at once. Don't miss it!

Cádiz — one of Europe's oldest cities, sitting right on the Atlantic. Walk along the water, explore the morning market with its incredible fresh produce and seafood, and soak in a city that feels genuinely off the tourist trail. Joyful and fulfilling in equal measure!

Practical Tips

  • Budget: Spain is one of Europe's best value destinations — around $120–180/day covers you comfortably — but the real luxury here is the culture. The food is fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced as a way of life, not a trend. A glass of wine is cheaper than water.Tapas are made fresh right in front of you. No matter what your price point, you choose the upgrades you want to pay for— and the lifestyle itself is always the upgrade.

  • Best time to visit: April/May or September/October — warm, manageable, and beautiful. Avoid July/August in Seville especially, it gets extremely hot.

  • Getting around: Trains between cities are fast and comfortable. Book ahead online for best prices. Walk everywhere within cities.

  • Embrace the schedule: Dinner is at 8pm or later. Don't fight it — lean in and you'll have a much more authentic experience.

  • Book ahead: Sagrada Família and Park Güell both require advance tickets. Don't show up without them.

  • Vegetarian tip: Spain is very tapas-friendly for vegetarians — patatas bravas, pan con tomate, pimientos de padrón, and tortilla española are all classics worth knowing.

One more thing — Spain has a way of making you feel completely at home while simultaneously showing you a world entirely its own. The regional culture in each city, the pride in local food and traditions, the warmth of the people — it all adds up to something that is truly rejuvenating for the soul. We're already planning our return.
