10 Days in Italy: The Perfect First-Timer's Itinerary (Rome, Florence & Venice)

Planning your first trip to Italy? Here's exactly how to spend 10 days in Rome, Florence and Venice — honest tips, local food finds, and a day by day itinerary.

Italy was at the top of our bucket list for years — and it did not disappoint. As two professionals who squeeze every moment out of our time off, we needed a trip that balanced the epic sights with the slow, savoring moments that make travel truly memorable. This itinerary gave us exactly that.

Here's how we'd plan it if we did it all over again.

Why Rome, Florence & Venice?

These three cities are Italy's holy trinity for first-timers — each completely different in feel, yet all unmistakably Italian. Rome is ancient and electric. Florence is artistic and soulful. Venice is like nowhere else on earth. Connected by a fast and easy train network, moving between them is half the adventure.

Rome (3 Days)

Arrive into Rome and give yourself permission to be overwhelmed — in the best possible way. The history here is everywhere, literally beneath your feet.

Our approach: walk everywhere. Rome rewards wanderers. You'll stumble onto a piazza, a fountain, a church, and old ancient ruins all in the same block!

For food, head to the Trastevere neighborhood — one of Rome's most authentic and beloved areas, full of cobblestone streets, ivy-covered buildings, and incredible restaurants. Don't miss Nannarellaa no-reservations gem with an amazing menu that perfectly captures the spirit of the neighborhood. Go early, lines move fast, and order everything!

And right next door is Otaleg — gelato spelled backwards, and supposedly some of the best in Rome. The kind of place only locals and lucky travelers find.

Getting from Rome to Florence

Take the Trenitalia high-speed train — it's just 1.5 hours and one of the great travel experiences in Europe. Book in advance online for the best prices.

Florence (4 Days)

Florence feels like living inside a museum, filled with not only art but delicious pasta . Four days here feels generous until you realize how much there is to see and how easily time melts away.

Walk everywhere — the city is compact and every street is beautiful. And then suddenly, you turn a corner and there it is — the Duomo. Nothing quite prepares you for it. It stops you in your tracks, and no matter how many photos you've seen, seeing it in person is a completely different experience. An absolute showstopper!

Save the Uffizi and the Accademia for mornings when crowds are lighter. Be sure to reserve ahead!

Our single favorite memory has to be the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo. Every evening locals and visitors gather, someone brings a guitar, and the whole city turns golden below you. It's not a tourist trap — it's a genuine shared moment and one of the most beautiful things we've ever seen. Don't miss it!

Florence is also one of the best bases in for epic day trips. We did so many and loved every one — but if we had to pick a highlight it's Cinque Terre. Five famous colorful villages clinging to dramatic cliffsides, turquoise water below, incredible food — it gives serious Amalfi Coast vibes but feels like more of a hidden gem. Absolutely do not skip it!

Getting from Florence to Venice

Another easy train ride — about 2 hours on the high-speed. You'll arrive at Santa Lucia station, step outside, and immediately be on the Grand Canal. The arrival alone is worth it.

Venice (2 Days)

Venice is a vibe unlike anywhere else in the world. Getting lost in the narrow alleyways, stumbling onto a quiet canal, wandering with no map and no plan — this is how Venice is meant to be experienced. Let yourself get lost.

Embrace the cicchetti culture — Venice's version of tapas. Pop into a bacaro (local wine bar), order a spritz and a few cicchetti (small bites on bread), and do it again at the next one. It's social, it's delicious, and it's how locals have been eating for centuries.

Our biggest tip: take the vaporetto (water bus) to Burano. It's a 45-minute ride to a tiny island of impossibly colorful homes, far fewer people, incredible seafood, and the kind of charm that makes you want to cancel your flight home. Easy, affordable, and absolutely worth it.

Practical Tips

  • Best time to visit: March/April or September/October — manageable crowds and beautiful weather. We went in late March and it was perfect!

  • Getting around: Train between cities, walk everywhere within them. Don't bother with cars.

  • Book ahead: Colosseum, Vatican, Uffizi, and Accademia all require timed entry tickets. Book at least 2-3 weeks ahead.

  • Vegetarian tip: Italy is incredibly vegetarian-friendly — pasta, pizza, risotto, and endless vegetable dishes make it easy.

  • Gelato rule: Only eat gelato from places where it's stored in covered metal containers, not piled high in colorful mounds — that's the tourist trap tell.

One more thing — this was our first trip to Italy, but it certainly won't be our last. Every city left us wanting more and already planning our return. And the food — the simplicity of the pasta, the pizza, the pure authentic ingredients — completely changed our appreciation for Italian cuisine forever. Italy does something to you. We can't wait to go back.
